The order is the first in a series of new rules that the agency is working to strengthen to ensure the safety and efficacy of the drug, it said. The rules will be phased out in coming months, the FDA said.
The Food and Drug Administration’s agency is taking other steps to help protect consumers from counterfeit drugs.
The rules will also help to ensure that pharmacies are able to sell them, it said.
According to a news release, a person who would like to take Viagra for erectile dysfunction and who would like to use it on his or her own will be advised to have an online consultation with a doctor within the first four weeks of using the drug.
The FDA said it will consider any such advice within two weeks after the person’s first use of the drug and within six months of the person’s second use.
“We understand that people who are looking for a way to buy Viagra in Los Angeles may not be able to,” the FDA said in a news release. “We will look into whether that is safe and how we can help to make Viagra available in the United States, including the use of Viagra.
“We will work with pharmaceutical companies to ensure that this product is used in the appropriate way to treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction.”
The FDA also said that people who have questions about using the drug, as well as people who are taking other drugs for similar conditions, will be given a written medical advice. The FDA said that this information will be kept confidential.
The agency also said that the FDA will take steps to ensure that the drug remains safe and effective for consumers, and that people who are unable to use the drug at their own discretion will not be taking it.
The FDA said it has also made changes to the rules for the online consultation process that it is working with the company that makes the drug.
The FDA said that an online consultation can be completed on a person’s computer or smartphone and the drug’s label will have a different name, for example, “Viagra.”
